Fluency & Comprehension Reading Intervention for All Seasons: Kindergarten Level
Flesch Kincaid Readability Grade Level is 0.0 for all passages in this packet.
This bundle contains 35 original fluency passages I wrote and 3 comprehension extension activities to accompany each one. The fluency passages are jam packed with sight words and also contain Kindergarten word families. All the fluency passages rhyme as well. Using one fluency passage per week, this would provide interventions for the whole school year. For each passage there is a color copy that you can print in color and reuse for students to read. There is also a teacher black and white copy that you can print off for each student and record their scores on it. It has sections to record fluency scores, rhyming identification and other notes. The comprehension questions and activities allow students to spend time on each selection and participate in close reading strategies to build reading skills. It draws upon Bloom’s Taxonomy to encourage higher levels of thinking skills.
This packet is different from the other fluency packets in several ways:
1) All the passages are on a 0.0 grade level using the Flesch-Kincaid Readability Calculator. They are not in chronological order, as with the other packets. Anything higher didn’t seem appropriate for kindergarten and first grade emergent readers. The passages do increase in the number of words throughout the packet, ranging from 29-77.
2) There are 3 correlating activities for each passage, but they follow a different format than the other packets. There is a low level page of comprehension questions, a sight word find coloring page to practice sight word identification, and a page with a higher-level thinking writing activity for day 3. The low level comprehension questions and the sight word find can be used either on day one or day two, depending on your students’ needs and your preference.
3) I’ve included the fluency file labels and progress monitoring graph for you to use if appropriate for your group of students. There is not a table of creation activity ideas, as the higher-level writing activity page is included for each passage for day 3. ***Please understand that because of the nature of kindergarten and their varying reading levels, you may need to tweak and be flexible with your utilization of these materials. *How to Use*
These fluency passages, comprehension questions and extension activities were designed to use as a reading intervention using the hot, warm and cold read strategy. For each week and fluency passage, it would look something like this:
Day 1: Cold read, discussion, comprehension questions (Lower levels of Blooms Taxonomy including Remembering and Understanding)
Day 2: Warm read, discussion, comprehension questions or activity (Middle levels of Blooms Taxonomy including Applying and Analyzing)
Day 3: Hot read, discussion, extension activity (Highest levels of Blooms Taxonomy including Evaluating and Creating).
It is always my goal to design the intervention to follow this format, but it is easier with some text and activities than others.
These materials could be used in other ways as well including as whole group fluency instruction or as homework. The materials in this packet are aligned to several Kindergarten Common Core Language Arts standards.
I also try to make the fluency passages a little more fun than other ones I’ve used. I included my fluency progress monitoring graph to track students’ fluency progress with this packet. I also included labels for file folders to create “fluency files” for each student.
